"REPORT ON THE SHALKA, FUTTEHPORE, PEGU, ASSAM AND SEGOWLEE METEORITES"

sent from the Asiatic Society of Bengal, (Calcutta) to the Imperial Museum of Vienna. Von Dr. W. Haidinger, Wien 1861. Taken from an unknown volume, 10 pages, one illustration, without binding. Haidinger describes a number of rare meteorites from India that recently found their way into the Vienna collection. Most of the locations were not represented in European Collections at the time. The 1850ies mark a revolution in colonieal sciences as the museums in India started to challenge the status of the British Museum as the ‘centre of all sciences’ and invested a lot of meteoritic material to get into trade relations with other European collections. Very rare English version of Haidingers paper

By Nevil Story Maskelyne, S. 64 -76. In: The American Journal of Science and Arts, Second Series, Volume XXXVI-November 1863. 458 pages, Contemporary cartboard binding with gild edging. Early work of Maskelyne after whom Tschermak later named the shock mineral Maskelynite which he discovered in the Shergotty meteorite. Maskelyne quotes Rose's classification scheme and also briefly discusses the contemporary terminology for several meteorite classes. The volume also contains "Meteoritic iron from Dakota Territorry - description and analysis" by Charles T. Jackson, pp. 259 - 261. Scarce

By E.H. von Baumhauer, Amsterdam 1872, 8 pages. Provides a report on the rain of meteoritic stones of Knyahinya which occured on June 9, 1866 in the vicinity of Nagy-Berezna in present Ukrainia. Includes the chemical and mineralogical composition of the meteorite according to Kenngott and studies of the author. In Dutch. Good condition, rare.

Amazing work listing almost all meteorites known at that time with their elemental composition. The book includes descriptions of many meteorites now lost. Rammelsberg also lists Shergotty as "Eucrite" and discusses Tschermaks discovery of Maskelynite in Shergotty.
