October 6, 1918, about 5:00 in the afternoon: Startled by a bright flash, peasants all over the northern counties of Saratov Oblast looked up to what appeared to be a group of fireballs coming from the Samara Oblast and moving to the west in a shallow arc, impressively highlighted by the sinking sun. The sighting was followed by what was described as “a powerful roar”, perceived by some as the advent of the Last Judgement. Two large fragments of the meteorite, reportedly weighing 500 kg each, were later recovered from a depth of 2 meters, one near the village of Dongus in Volsky District, and the second close to a settlement near Petrovsky. According to the reports, a third mass that was seen to fall in the Khvalynsk area on the border of Samara Oblast remains missing to the present day. This specimen is a 2.5 kg Fragment from one of the 500 kg pieces dug out from the Impact pits. Specimen is uncleaned, red Russian soil is still adhering to the fresh fusion crust.

Fragment with IMB and LL5 lithology: 76.10 g

Chelyabinsk fragment that was found in mid-May east of the village of Kazbaevo. The specimen shows primary and secondary fusion crust, and one large fractured surface with the characteristic black & white pattern of shock planes and impact melt veins. Meteorite Displays little to no oxidation and is a pristine sample of the most spectacular and best-documented meteorite fall in modern times.

„A fireball was witnessed in the area, but no records of the direction of movement were recorded. A single stone of 3,165 g was found by A. Salem El Moichine, a local resident, on the same day at 13:00 hrs local time. The sample for classification was provided to NMBE by M. Ould Mounir, Nouakchott, who obtained it from his cousin who recovered the meteorite. According to S. Buhl (Hamburg, Germany), more than 20 specimens were later recovered by locals and meteorite finders. These finds define a 8 km long strewnfield. The total recovered mass is 46.00 kg.“ (Meteoritical Bulletin, no. 92). This is a pristine wedge-shaped fragment with 90 percent fusion crust and distinct flowlines on its largest surface. Flowlines and frothing can also be seen on one of the trailing surfaces. One fractured surface shows tertiary fusion crust developed at the latest stage of the hot flight.

This is a beautiful half individual with a mirror-polished cut surface, showing a checkered pattern of bright yellow olivines and dark pyroxene grains. Along the grain boundaries, a spiderweb-like network of graphite and metal has developed. With 612 g, this hand specimen opens a window into the 4.55 Billion years distant past of our solar system.

History: Discovered by local people in the NW area of Mauritania in 2012, purchased in Nouadhibou in 2012 Oct.

Physical characteristics: (R. Bartoschewitz, Bart) One brown fragment of 1200 g. Saw cut shows brown close packed grains. Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.48.

Petrography: (R. Bartoschewitz, Bart) Microprobe examination of a thin section shows olivine and pyroxene grains with triple junctions, grain size 0.5-6 mm. Grain boundaries occupied with graphite and metal. Graphite occurs as elongated areas up to 2 × 7 mm.

Geochemistry: (R. Bartoschewitz, Bart, P. Appel and B. Mader, Kiel) Olivine: Fa21.0±2.0 (Fa14.7-22.1; Cr2O3=0.6-0.7 wt.%; Fe/Mn=44, n=15). Ca-poor pyroxene: Fs7.0 (n=1). Ca-rich pyroxene: Fs15En72Wo13 (n=26). Kamacite: Ni=5.0, Co=0.35, Si<0.3 wt.% (n=6).

Plessitic octahedrites with their delicate crystal pattern are among the structurally most beautiful iron meteorites. While Taza used to be a rather common location, larger regmaglypted individuals have become quite rare. This particular Taza mass is a spectacularly sculpted specimen, exhibiting distinct regmaglypts on the trailing face and a smoothly ablated convex breast side. This shaping indicates a stable oriented flight of the iron during the final stage of the ablative descent. Sizable and representative display and hand specimen of a classic iron meteorite.

BORDJ BARDJI MOKHTAR

Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Adrar Province, a new unclassified iron from the Algeria – Mali border area. The compact yet heavily sculpted piece weighs 11.2 kg, with well preserved fusion crust on large parts of the surface, coated with a only a thin layer of surface oxidation. Large regmaglypts and heavy ablation of edges and protruding ridges bear witness to its fiery descent through Earth’s atmosphere. The iron was found by nomadic Berbers in 2001 – “probed” for a possible gold or silver content with negative results, and left in place, remebered only as a curiosity. Only 2015, when the finders made contact with Moroccan meteorite dealers, the iron was recovered from its find location and recognized as iron Meteorite. Clampmarks and a broken corner are evidence of the crude analytical approach of the local finders. This is a massive celestial iron from one of the more archaic regions of the Central Sahara …

A new iron from Mauretania. One regmaglypted mass of 4.5 kg was found in the Erg el Ahmar, north of Taoudenni near the border to Algeria. The windpolished patina shows a beautiful grey-green luster, the cut and polished surface reveals a number of enigmatic geometrically arrayed inclusions, which may be plessite needles or rhabdite (I’m guessing here). The etched surface shows a distinct array of Neumann lines as common in most hexaedrites. The iron is currently under classification at the University of Alberta, Canada, the hexaedrite designation is confirmed.

Sculpted desert iron meteorite with remnant regmaglypts and laterite patina. Subsurface weathering has carved out the regmaglypts on the buried portion of this iron and created a unique pattern or sharp ridges and distinctive bowl-shaped cavities. In contrast, the exposed and windposlished portion developed a rich desert patina. With a weight of 17 kg, this sample of asteroidal core material is a true museum-grade display piece.
